Don’t fret. We offer treatments to help.
What Causes Brown Spots
There are several reasons why those pesky blotchy brown spots develop on the skin. The reasons include:
- Sun exposure over time
- Certain medications such as estrogen and other hormones
- Genetics contribute too
In simple terms, a brown spot is a focal area of either a higher number of pigment cells (called melanocytes) or an increase number of pigment molecules (called melanin).
Excess melanin can reside in the top layer of your skin, the epidermis, or deeper in the dermis. Different types of increased pigmentation require different lightening treatments, depending on where the brown spots are residing.
How Can I get Rid of Brown Spots?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL’s) and Laser devices can remove brown spot and patches from your skin by selectively targeting the melanin and melanocyte, leaving the other cells untouched. We find these treatments the most effective because you can directly target the affected cells.
Using Lasers for Brown Spots
Today’s laser devices have dramatically changed and advanced the way we can treat skin issues.
Laser defined: Lasers are unique light emitting devices, which give off a single very specific wavelength of light-targeted to eliminate one issue or problem.
Certain lasers are specifically designed to just remove brown spots, as these devices can break up the excess melanin causing the discoloration.
The laser treatment is a quick in-office procedure that requires no anesthesia. We’ve found that 1 – 2 treatments provide the best results.
Using Intense Pulsed Lift (IPL) Photo Rejuvenation for Brown Spots
IPL devices are designed to treat combinations of skin issues, versus lasers, which treat just one skin target.
IPL Defined: An IPL device works by delivering a broad range of colors of light at the same time, to treat multiple skin conditions occurring in larger areas. Filters can then be used to selectively deliver light in various wavelengths. The different wavelengths of light can be delivered to different layers (and depths) of the skin.
Using this technology, we can set a goal to help make your skin more evenly colored, by decreasing the irregular brownish and reddish areas that develop from aging and sun damage. In addition, IPLs can brighten the skin and give it a more youthful glow.
IPL treatments usually take 15 – 20 minutes in our office. Like lasers, no needles or anesthesia is needed. Your skin can be red for a few hours and feel like a mild sunburn following the procedure, but no downtime is required.
The IPL wand is moved over the entire treatment site, and thus lightens the sun damage across the whole area, not just targeted focal points. IPL treatments can effectively diffuse brown pigmentation and blotchy redness – on the face, neck, chest, arms and legs.
