For anyone who has ever tried to combat the signs of aging with injectables, the FDA’s latest approval of Radiesse for hand
rejuvenation is a major victory. We have all seen people with young looking faces and old, leathery hands that just don’t seem to match chronologically. That is now a thing of the past, thanks to the calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres in the gel-like Radiesse formula. The gel goes to work immediately creating added volume, but continues to work by stimulating our natural collagen production.
“For mature women, especially those who are thin, Radiesse is a great option as a filler for hands,” says board-certified plastic surgeon, Brent Moelleken MD FACS, based in Beverly Hills. “It’s safe for all skin types, and leaves no obvious line between the hand and wrist. The hands are the last frontier, so-to-speak, and often give away the true age of a woman.”
Radiesse is from a family of injectable fillers designed to plump the skin from below the surface in order to hide lines, wrinkles, and other imperfections. It has been a big hit for facial contouring for years, and now physicians have FDA approval to use it on patients to achieve youthful-looking hands with the same soft substance that has been keeping their smile lines, chin wrinkles and other areas at bay. This is the only FDA-approved filler for the hands even though physicians have been using fat and hyaluronic acid off-label for years. Radiesse has a milky color and is opaque which makes it ideal for hiding veins when injected under the skin as well.
Depending on the severity of the volume loss, patients should expect to pay for about one to two syringes of Radiesse at an average cost of $800 – $1,200 per syringe for their hands. The youthful, plumped up result generally lasts up to a year. “Because the product is so pliable and soft, it’s a great filler overall – and I use it for deep filling in the face as well,” explains Dr. Moelleken.
Improve Your Hands Overall Look
“Other complementary treatments for rejuvenating hands include skin tightening lasers and fractional lasers, which can be used in conjunction with Radiesse to create the most youthful appearance: however the treatments should be spaced out. Additionally, anyone considering injectables to the hand should seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience using Radiesse, since there are many arteries, veins, and nerves in the hand and comprehensive knowledge of the anatomy is a must!”
Most adverse events reported during the clinical trial were injection site reactions such as swelling, redness, pain, and bruising, which were usually mild to moderate, short in duration (lasting about 1 week), and required no further treatment. This product is not recommended for anyone with severe allergies, bleeding disorders, or skin infections.
The days of telling a woman’s age by her hands are now behind us ladies. High five to that!
